Billions will be spent online in the run up to Christmas header image

Up to £4.6 billion will be spent by online shoppers in the weeks leading up to Christmas, a new report has found.

According to Capgemini and IMRG, there will be a 15 per cent rise in the number of purchases made via the internet in the weeks commencing December 3rd and 10th.

Smartphone and tablet users will account for around £920 million of this figure and Capgemini's head of retail and technology Chris Webster said mobile retailing has become increasingly popular in 2012.

"We have seen this year, that mobile access is a must have, not a nice to have for retailers," he remarked.

In the first quarter of the year, 8.2 per cent of all e-retail sales were made through smartphones or tablets.

A separate study conducted by Gartner also showed that 821 million smartphones will have been sold around the world by the end of 2012, which highlights just how important developments like satellite broadband are becoming.
