The number of people using Twitter across the world grew to 241 million in the final quarter of 2013.
This represents growth of 3.8 per cent on the previous quarter and is roughly four times more than the population of the UK.
However, the social network also revealed it made a loss of $645 million (£396 million) for 2013, a year that saw it float on the New York Stock Exchange for the first time.
Twitter still has some way to go if it is to reach the level of Facebook, which celebrated its tenth birthday this week.
The network now has 1.23 billion users - which is roughly 17 per cent of the world population as a whole. It made a profit of $1.5 billion last year.
Katy Perry is currently the most followed person on Twitter, with over 50 million people subscribed to the singer's updates.
