Retirees turning to the web header image

A growing number of UK retirees are confident using the internet.

New research from retirement home construction firm McCarthy & Stone has revealed more than half of people over 60 are comfortable downloading apps, backing up their computer and uploading photos to Facebook.

Some 78 per cent of retirees have used an online banking service, while 72 per cent read the news online.

Ali Crossley, executive director of McCarthy & Stone, said: "There is a perception retirees are less in touch when it comes to technology, but that really isn't the case anymore."

She added the internet can be a "godsend" for people who struggle for mobility.

The organisation's survey revealed half of retirees now own tablet computers, while 47 per cent have a smartphone. A further 75 per cent own a laptop and 61 per cent have a PC.
