ONS figures show importance of internet to British businesses header image

New data from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) has revealed the key role the internet plays in British business. 

The organisation revealed 95 per cent of companies had a broadband connection in 2012, while 82 per cent had a website. 

However, significant proportion of companies are still relying on slow connections.

Nearly eight per cent have a service with speeds below two Mbps, while 42.1 per cent have internet access no faster than ten Mbps. Such organisations may benefit from switching to satellite broadband.

Sales from websites accounted for six per cent (£164 billion) of UK business turnover last year, which is up from five per cent (£133 billion) the year before. Total e-commerce trade was responsible for 18 per cent of business turnover.

The ONS also revealed 43 per cent of UK companies used social networking websites last year, while 23 per cent made use of social media sites like Facebook and Twitter to interact with their customers.
