This is beneficial for both businesses and their employees. The former can reduce office costs and provide their staff with a better work/life balance, while the latter enjoy greater flexibility and can avoid time-consuming and costly commutes.
Indeed, home working is now so popular that around half of employees in the UK do so on a regular basis, according to research from thinkbroadband. Meanwhile, 62 per cent consider it an important part of their job.
However, a significant number of these feel they are hindered by poor quality internet connections, with 37 per cent of the home workers surveyed saying they are unhappy with their broadband service, the Telegraph reports.
The most common problem people suffer is slow download and upload speeds, with 34 per cent of respondents citing this as an issue. A further 23 per cent said buffering causes difficulties, while 16 per cent pointed to temporary loss of service as a factor.
Thinkbroadband co-founder Sebastien Lahtinen told the news provider: "Most of us are used to working from a single office and take connectivity for granted. But even very small geographical variances can influence your internet service."
He claimed businesses must ensure their employees have a fast and reliable broadband service before giving them permission to work from home.
The problems highlighted in the thinkbroadband survey are common issues across the country and affect a significant number of people. However, such issues can easily be solved by switching to satellite broadband, which provides a reliable service with fast speeds of up to 20 Mbps.
This technology is particularly useful in rural areas where broadband services tend to be far inferior to those in large towns and cities. The potential for home working is just one of the many benefits access to a faster connection can bring to people in such locations.
