More than eight in ten UK internet users shop on the web, new research has revealed.
Statistics released by the European Commission showed 82 per cent of people with web access engaged in online retail last year, which is higher than in any other European Union nation.
Clothes and sports goods and holidays and accommodation are the most popular things to buy on the internet, with 51 per cent of users having done so for both of these categories.
This is a significant increase on the figures recorded in 2008, which stood at just 30 per cent and 35 per cent respectively.
More than a third (36 per cent) of people have purchased a book or other reading material online, while a fifth have ordered their food and groceries. This is up from 27 per cent and 14 per cent in 2008.
