Online sales on the up in December header image

The ongoing increase in online shopping continued over December and looks set to go on throughout 2013, according to the latest report from IMRG and Capgemini.

Figures from the IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index shows that sales increased by 12 per cent in December on a year-on-year basis.

Furthermore, the organisations are forecasting growth of 12 per cent over the course of 2013, meaning consumers will spend around £87 billion online.

IMRG chief operations and policy offer Andrew McClelland said growth came in above expectations despite the difficult economic conditions in the UK.

"Retail sites can be accessed through a range of devices and in a range of contexts, whether during a commute, in-store or increasingly in front of the TV," Mr McClelland added.

Satellite broadband and other technological advances have made getting online easier for the majority of Britons, although certain rural areas still struggle with poor ADSL connections.
